New PartnerOptimizer research featured by MSP Summit reveals how leading MSPs are differentiating through AI, technology specialization, and industry focus, and why benchmarking against the right peers matters more than ever.

At the 2026 MSP Summit in Orlando, PartnerOptimizer CEO Dina Moskowitz joined Paco Lebron, founder of ProdigyTeks, to present The DNA of MSP Growth , a data-driven look at what distinguishes leading managed service providers from the broader MSP market.

Drawing on PartnerOptimizer’s proprietary NeuralPartner intelligence and research comparing 46,000 MSPs with the MSP 501, the keynote and breakout session examined four dimensions of MSP positioning: industry focus, technology practices, vendor and product ecosystems, and AI signals.

The research was featured in Dave Raffo’s MSP Summit article, “Separating MSP 501 Signals From Industry Noise” . But the bigger story extends beyond the rankings.

The AI divide is widening

Among MSP 501 companies, 52% demonstrated Frontier AI signals in 2026 , up from 40% in 2025. Across the broader MSP market, just 19% reached that classification, up from 16% a year earlier.

PartnerOptimizer’s Frontier AI classification identifies strong observable signals that AI is embedded in an MSP’s capabilities, offerings, technology ecosystem, or market positioning. These are indicators of market readiness and positioning, rather than an audit of internal AI deployment.

The implication: Leading MSPs are establishing a more visible AI identity, while much of the broader market has yet to demonstrate the same level of maturity in its external signals.

Technology specialization sets leaders apart

The analysis also surfaced striking differences in the technology practices associated with MSP 501 companies.

The takeaway isn’t that every MSP should offer every service. It is that comparing capabilities against relevant peers can guide decisions about portfolio expansion, vendor relationships, and competitive differentiation.

Vertical expertise matters, but how specialized are you?

Seventy-seven percent of MSP 501 companies focus on one or two industry verticals. Financial services and government/public sector stand out as major areas of concentration.

During the Summit session, Paco Lebron challenged MSPs to assess whether they truly understand the distinct needs of their chosen industries, or are simply marketing to sectors where they already happen to have customers.

Knowing your primary vertical is useful. Knowing how you compare with other MSPs serving that same vertical is actionable intelligence.

From industry averages to individual MSP intelligence

One of the clearest takeaways from MSP Summit wasn’t just what the data revealed. It was the appetite among MSP owners and operators for deeper, more relevant benchmarks.

Attendees wanted to understand where their own businesses stand: which capabilities distinguish their peers, which vendor partnerships matter, how their AI signals compare, and where greater industry specialization might create an advantage.

These are the questions that turn industry data into decisions.
